1932-D Washington Quarter Value

Only 436,800 were struck at Denver in the first year of the Washington quarter — making the 1932-D the key date of one of America's most collected coin series.

Washington Quarter Value Guide

The 1932-D Washington quarter is the premier key date of the Washington quarter series and one of the most recognized key dates in 20th century American numismatics. With only 436,800 produced at the Denver Mint in the first year of the series, genuine examples are scarce at every grade level. Even a circulated Good-4 example commands $100–$150 — a significant premium above the coin's 90% silver melt value — and gem uncirculated specimens have sold for $10,000–$15,000+ at major auction.

The 1932-D and 1932-S — The Two Key Dates

The Washington quarter series began in 1932 with strikes at Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco. Philadelphia produced over 5.4 million — a common coin worth silver melt in circulated grades. Denver and San Francisco each produced under 500,000 — making both the D and S first-year issues the key dates of the entire series.

1932 VarietyMintageG-4 ValueVF-20 ValueMS-63 Value
1932 (Philadelphia)5,404,000Silver melt$8–$12$30–$60
1932-D (Denver)436,800$100–$150$275–$400$2,000–$4,000
1932-S (San Francisco)408,000$100–$150$275–$425$2,500–$5,000

The 1932-S is slightly scarcer than the 1932-D by mintage (408,000 vs 436,800) and commands modestly higher prices in gem uncirculated grades. In circulated grades, values are essentially identical. Both are required for a complete Washington quarter date-and-mint set, and both are most commonly faked by adding a D or S mint mark to a common 1932 Philadelphia coin.

Authentication — Added Mint Marks

The most common fake 1932-D is a genuine 1932 Philadelphia quarter with a D mint mark added by engraving or stamping. The same approach is used on the 1932-S. Under a 10x loupe, examine the mint mark area on the reverse — the mint mark appears on Washington quarters at the bottom of the reverse, between the eagle's tail feathers. A genuine D shows clean metal with no disturbance. An added D shows tool marks, metal displacement, or different surface texture immediately around the mark.

PCGS and NGC authentication is mandatory for any 1932-D or 1932-S Washington quarter purchase above $100. The price difference between an authentic D and a fake is $100–$15,000+ depending on grade. No legitimate price is cheap enough to skip certification on these coins.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is a 1932-D Washington quarter worth?
In Good-4 condition, $100–$150. Very Fine (VF-20) brings $275–$400. About Uncirculated (AU-55) commands $700–$1,200. Choice Uncirculated (MS-63) sells for $2,000–$4,000. Gem MS-65 examples have sold for $7,000–$12,000 and the finest known specimens exceed $15,000. All values assume PCGS or NGC authentication.
How do I identify the 1932-D Washington quarter?
The D mint mark appears on the reverse at the bottom, between the eagle's tail feathers and just above the bow of the wreath. The date 1932 appears on the obverse below Washington's portrait. Confirm both the 1932 date and the D mint mark. The most common fake is an added mint mark — verify with a loupe, then authenticate with PCGS or NGC for any purchase.
Is the 1932-S also a key date?
Yes — the 1932-S with 408,000 struck is slightly rarer than the 1932-D. In circulated grades, values are essentially equal. In gem MS-65 and above, the S commands a premium: roughly $2,500–$5,000 vs $2,000–$4,000 for the D in MS-63, widening in higher grades. Both are required for a complete Washington quarter set and both are routinely faked with added mint marks.
Is the 1932 Washington quarter silver?
Yes — all Washington quarters from 1932 through 1964 are 90% silver, containing 0.1808 troy ounces of pure silver. At $30/oz silver, melt value is approximately $5.42. The 1932-D's numismatic premium far exceeds its silver content at every grade level — even a circulated Good-4 example at $100–$150 represents an 18–28x premium over its $5.42 melt value.
What other Washington quarter dates are valuable?
Beyond the 1932-D and 1932-S, the most significant semi-key dates in the Washington quarter series are: 1936-D ($30–$500+), 1937-S ($15–$200+), 1938 ($15–$300+), 1938-S ($20–$400+), 1939-S ($10–$150+), and 1940-D ($10–$100+). The full series from 1932–1964 in silver offers dozens of dates with meaningful premiums above melt in uncirculated grades. Post-1964 clad quarters are common and worth face value in circulated condition.
